"Veggie Market Vintage Themed Embroidered Quilt" for Japan Project

Like many others I would really like to be able to hop a plane to Japan to help people right now, or better yet, bring some Japanese people to the U.S.A. to share our home. Neither of those options is available to us right now, nor is donating a million dollars to fly over supplies.
What is a crafty gal to do besides helping with local donations and regular praying? Why create a quilt to auction, that's what!
Please join me in the creation of a "Veggie Market Vintage Themed Embroidered Quilt" to auction. Proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross for Japan.

I am so excited about this project that I am sharing it before I have even started any of my pieces or have a sketch up. Picture this! Patchwork with squares featuring embroidery done with vintage or vintage inspired patterns of veggies. They can be anthromorphic (with faces), in baskets, separate, or in bunches. Any veggies will do!
The plan is to have 12 ½ embroidered squares alternated with four patch blocks made of veggie themed or veggie colored fabrics. The four patch blocks would be made up of 4 – 6 ½ inch squares.
What is needed are 12 ½ embroidered squares on white done in basic crayon box colors including at least a 1 inch border that is embroidery free for assembly using vintage or vintage or vintage inspired patterns.

Also needed are donations of 6 ½ inch squares of veggie themed or veggie colored fabrics that are pre-washed and pressed. This is a good way to get a large variety of fabrics for a very scrappy quilt.
We also need a fun name for our quilt!

If you do not embroider or sew, but wish to be involved, please email me at momwaldsplace@gmail.com.

Two good places to find vintage veggie embroidery patterns is the Hoop Love Group at Flickr and the Vintage Embroidery Patterns Group at Flickr.

Please leave a comment if you have any additional ideas or want to help in any other ways. Email me at momwaldsplace@gmail.com when you are ready for a mailing address.
This is going to be so much fun, and we can let them know that we care!

ps.  I am so excited that I already started a gallery at Flickr of some of the available vintage veggie patterns, and found that Mmaammbr has a whole set for her fruit and veggie patterns.

I will be back from Uganda on April 16th and better not commit to anything in the weeks before I leave, but would love to help when I get back. Can I maybe help with piecing?? Will you be at Kathy's tomorrow night?

  4. Hi MomW - I haven't embroidered in years ... and it would take me years to do a block. But I can supply some veggie/fruit squares in 6.5" quilting cotton fabrics ... I'll email you for your address.

They won't be vintage-looking but it looks like that's okay ... right?

  5. Oh ... one more question. You say veggies. But some of your pics show fruits. Will you include both?

And don't get me started on the "what is a tomato?" question ... ha ha.

  6. Yay everybody! I will be doing regular posts as we go along.

    Yes, fruits and veggies!

The fabric does not need to be vintage looking, that would be too hard to find much of. Even one 6 1/2" square would be great if somebody has a scrap.

    Thanks EVERYBODY!!!

  8. Hey P. don't stress over the embroidery, it's supposed to be fun. Even a bit of fabric would be delightful though! Thanks for considering helping.
